The Legendary Alpine Lake Drakolimni

The legentary alpine lake Drakolimni (Dragonlake) hike, starts from the village of Mikro Papigo in a wonderful forest. This is “alpine style” hiking as we ascent to the high medows of mt. Timfi and climb to the highest points of Zagori!

A very well marked trail starts traversing a foresty slope and takes us to the first most beautifull spring of Avragonio, decorated with a beautifull plane tree and as soon as we cross it the uphill starts towards the medow where thousands of sheep used to graze!

As soon as we reach Astraka’s mountain refuge, located at an altitude of 1950m we will enjoy a lunch and then continue our hike towards the mythical dragonlake. The north side of the lake offers breathtaking views of Smolikas and Vasilitsa as well as Mt. Grammos in the Albanian border and Aoos valley, whereas the east side offers wonderful views of the northwest Gamilla peak.

We return from the same trail back to the Astraka refuge and then back to Mikro Papigo where a long but rewarding day is compete, having in our memory the legentary alpine lake Drakolimni
