Our self-guided hiking tour takes you deep into the heart of the Pindus Mountains, the longest and most captivating mountain range in Greece. Here, you’ll uncover a side of Greece that many travelers miss — a land of hidden gems, traditional stone villages, and serene natural beauty.

Tour highlights

Mountains. From here, the trail leads to the Vradeto Plains and the iconic Vradeto Steps, an inspiring stone pathway with breathtaking mountain views.

We spend the night in Kapesovo, a picturesque village steeped in history and traditional charm. As we continue, the trail guides us along ancient Merchants’ Paths, across historic stone bridges, and deep into the wilderness area of the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world.

In the following days, we ascend to the heights of Timfi Mountain, making our way to the serene Drakolimni Alpine Lake, a hidden gem surrounded by towering peaks. An overnight stay at the Astraka Refuge allows us to experience the tranquility of this remote alpine area.

Finally, our journey circles back to Tsepelovo, concluding in the beautiful village square — a perfect ending to an unforgettable hiking adventure in Zagori and the Pindus Mountains.

Day 1

Arrival - meet the guide in Tsepelovo village.

Meeting at Tsepelovo village. We rest in the traditional guesthouse and walk around the village.

Vradeto steps and Beloi

From Tsepelovo (1050m), we hike upwards to Vradeto (1250m), the highest village of Zagori. From Vradeto, a scenic trail leads to the Beloi Viewpoint (1350m), offering panoramic views of the Vikos Gorge and the trails we’ll explore in the coming days. We then return to Vradeto and continue down to Kapesovo village via the historic Vradeto Steps, a beautiful stone path built in the 16th century along the slopes of the Vikos Gorge.

Bridges of Zagori

From the main square of Kapesovo, we walk downhill through a beautiful oak forest to the historic village of Kipi, the former capital of Zagori. Known as the “village of bridges,” Kipi is famous for its beautiful stone bridges, and we’ll explore four of them on a short tour. From there, we continue towards Vitsa via the Vitsa Steps, an ancient trail built over 200 years ago, and spend the night in this charming traditional village.

The Vikos gorge hike

We begin our adventure by crossing the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest and most impressive canyons in the world. A short transfer brings us to Monodendri (2 km), where we start our hike downhill to the river that flows through the gorge. From there, we walk alongside the stream, deep into the heart of Vikos–Aoos National Park, a wilderness area that is home to rare wildlife such as birds of prey, bears, and wild boars. Our hike ends with a short 40-minute ascent to the picturesque village of Vikos, where we spend the night.

The springs of Voidomatis

We follow an old uphill path, crossing beautiful ravines on our way to Papingo Village. High above, the impressive Towers of Papingo rise sharply, forming a striking and inaccessible landmark that dominates the landscape.

Dinner and overnight stay in local hotel in Mikro Papingo.

Drakolimni alpine lake

We hike from Papingo towards the high plateaus of Mount Timfi, reaching the beautiful Drakolimni Alpine Lake at 2,050 meters. Our journey starts in Mikro Papingo, one of the prettiest villages of Zagori, and continues through serene mountain landscapes towards the Astraka Mountain Refuge. Along the trail, we pass several natural water springs, so carrying a lot of water is not necessary. After a short break at the refuge, we continue for another 1.5 hours to Drakolimni, an alpine lake offering spectacular views of the Pindos Mountain Range. We then return to the refuge, where we spend the night.

From Astraka to Tsepelovo

Today is a long but rewarding day as we cross the Timfi Mountain Range. We begin by hiking down from the Astraka Refuge to the expansive plains of the mountain. Beneath the impressive cliffs of Astraka, we continue to the small water reservoir Loutsa Robozi, a traditional watering spot for shepherds and their animals in summer.

From here, the trail leads us to the edge of Megas Lakos, an impressive canyon that stretches all the way to Vikos. After crossing a natural spring, we make our way towards the village of Tsepelovo, our final hiking destination. We relax in the village square and visit a local shop to taste local bee products — including honey and more — and chat with the beekeeper. To end the day, we drive to Elati for an overnight stay.
