The legendary alpine lake Drakolimni (Dragonlake), is a place that excited the imagination of the ancient Greeks, who put a dragon to guard the mountains of the area.
One of the few alpine lakes we have in Greece, located at the edge of the cliffs of mt. Timfi.
The lake has a depth of about 5 meters and it only receives its water from rain, and from melting snow around late July.
Inside the lake we find the alpine newt, a tiny prehistoric creature, strictly protected.
On the meadows around the lake, chamois (mountain goats) and wild horses enjoy the quiet and freedom, while feeding on the grass.
Tour highlights
A very well marked trail starts on a forest slope and takes us to the first most beautiful spring of Avragonio, decorated with a beautiful plane tree, and as soon as we cross it, we begin going uphill towards the meadow where thousands of sheep used to graze!
As soon as we reach Astraka’s mountain refuge, located at an altitude of 1950m, we enjoy a drink and then continue our hike towards the mythical Dragonlake. The north side of the lake offers breathtaking views of Smolikas and Vasilitsa North Pindos trail, as well as Mt. Grammos in the Albanian border and Aoos valley. The east side offers wonderful views of the northwest Gamilla peak.
We return back to the Astraka refuge via the same trail and then back to Mikro Papigo, where a long and rewarding day is completed. The image of lake Drakolimni is what stays in most people's minds at the end of this journey.
